Third Graders Keyboarding

FullSizeRender 2

Third graders are learning all about touch typing! We focus on technique, posture, and keeping our eyes on the screen and hands on the home row.

TIP: Use your index fingers to feel for the bumps on the F and J keys. Almost every keyboard has them! This will help you keep your hands in place on the home row. winking-face-facebook-symbol

All third-sixth graders have full access to Typing.com where they can continue their lessons and play games at home. Typing is all about muscle memory, so the more kids practice, the better!

Super Digital Citizens Save the Day!

il_570xN.347082039

WAM! BAM! POW! That’s the sound of our super digital citizens exploring what it means to be responsible and respectful to their offline and online communities, and taking a step toward being good digital citizens. For this project, students created digital superheroes who exhibit exemplary attributes and are able to solve digital dilemmas in a responsible way. Here are juts a few topics we discussed together:

  • Stay safe online (don’t share private information, use safe search engines, go to places you know)
  • Research responsibly (never copy and paste, evaluate websites, use multiple sources)
  • Be an “upstander” if you encounter cyberbullying or anything questionable online (tell a teacher, or parent immediately)
  • Be positive and friendly with our classmates on the blog (leave compliments and encouragements in the comments)

As a group we were able to:

  • compare and contrast their responsibilities to their offline and online communities
  • reflect on the characteristics that make someone an upstanding citizen
  • devise resolutions to digital dilemmas

Each student took one dilemma that their super digital citizen would solve, and using Marvel’s Create Your Own Superhero site, we created digital citizen superheroes who can stand up together to promote positive behavior online. Take a look! (You can click each comic to make bigger.)

It’s always a good time to start a discussion about digital citizenship with your family. We live in a time with so many technology tools and we practically have access to the world at our fingertips; it is imperative that we teach our children how to safely navigate this vast new space, and how to act responsibly online. With great power, comes great responsibility.

Fun Video Friday + Typing Challenge =

Happy Fun Video Friday! I found just the right video to celebrate the conclusion of our DMP Typing Challenge. Turn your volume on and click play to listen to the beautiful sound of fingers typing.

Typing Challenge Update:

On that note… our third graders recently completed a month long typing challenge and it was quite a success!  Every student practiced keyboarding outside of technology class at least once, every student has learned the proper home row position, and each student has improved his or her typing speed by at least 20%! Congratulations third grade! Each week we celebrated five special students who spent the most time outside of class practicing. Click here to see who made our Top 5 for each week.

Week 4 Top 5Last Week’s Top 5 (with the most practice time)

Keyboarding is all about muscle memory. The more our students practice, the more fluent their typing will become. I only get to see the kids once a week, so even if they can find 3-5 minutes at home to type or practice resting on the home row, they will surely improve their typing over time.

Student Typing

Congratulations to the students who have made the Top 5 during our challenge and congratulations to all for participating! We will continue to work towards our classroom goal of 10-15wpm, and when we meet that goal, the whole class will be rewarded with a TECHIE PARTY. During the techie party we’ll watch videos on the latest innovations in technology, have keyboarding races, and celebrate our success! Click here to see our class goal tracker chart.

Top 5 Group

All DMP students are welcome to use TypingWeb.com to practice their typing as well, or if you would like to look at other options for practice, click here for my list of keyboarding resources and practice tips. You can even use my typing challenge guidelines to create your own family typing challenge at home. It’s a great way to make keyboarding fun, and finally meet your typing speed goals.

Code.org: Anybody Can Learn

HourofCode-Photo2

Our students (Grade 3-6) recently participated – along with 5 million students, in 34,000 classrooms, across 167 countries, in the “Hour ofCode” program by Code.org. Through fun games and projects, students learned how to code their own computer program using the programming language JavaScript. Simple computer science activities (like the ones available on Code.org) can help nurture creativity and problem solving skills. By getting a feel for computational thinking early, students will have a foundation for success in any future career path.

Please visit Code.org to learn more about the exciting world of computer programming. I encourage everyone to try at least one of the lessons, it’s a lot of fun!

DMP Typing Challenge: Challenge Accepted!

Our third grade class has completed their first full week of participation in our DMP Typing Challenge (click here for more info). Speed and accuracy scores are already up, up, and away! As you know, our students are competing weekly for the top 5 fastest typing speeds, top 5 most practice time, and for our whole class to reach the goal of 15 words per minute. I will update my blog weekly on Wednesday evenings with the results, and will share them with the kids on Thursdays during technology.

Our first week of results are in, so let’s all congratulate these kiddos on their hard work! Drum roll….

Third Grade Film Festival!

Our third grade class has been hard at work shooting and editing their short films about government laws and school rules. On Monday, June 3rd, Mr. Kelly and I will host a casual and fun “film festival” for the third grade students to view each other’s iMovie projects.

Filmmakers will present their group projects and discuss what it was like to make a movie from start to finish with their fellow classmates.  What did they love the most about this project? You’ll find out soon! Footage from our festival presentations will be posted right here to this blog shortly after.

Teachers: Do you have a student blogger who might be interested in covering our film festival? Email vscott@delmarpines.com to find out more about press passes!
