Third Graders Are Typing!

Third graders are learning all about touch typing! We focus on technique, posture, and keeping our eyes on the screen and hands on the home row.

We use the website Typing.com to practice these skills.

TYPING TIP: Use your index fingers to feel for the bumps on the F and J keys. Almost every keyboard has them! This will help you keep your hands in place on the home row. winking-face-facebook-symbol

Third graders will be participating in their first ever typing challenge during the month of November! All they have to do is practice typing at home by logging into typing.com. Student usernames are: studentnumber+firstname+dmp and passwords are delmarpines.

TEDxSanDiego

I went to TEDxSanDiego with Mrs. Manthe and we had so much fun! There was an “innovation alley” with new companies that presented their cutting edge technology, there were performances by a classical pianist and a jazz quartet, and most importantly there were so many inspirational TED talks by local San Diegans. What a day!

One of the TED speakers, Manal Omar
The Doc and his DeLorean made an appearance:)

National Geographic Photographer Brian Sokol taught us that the power of a story from one person can be more powerful than any statistic.

Words for the World by Liam Ram

Words for the World by Liam Ram

I am so excited to share this special message from DMP alumnus Liam Ram! Please read:

My name is Liam Ram and I am an alumnus of Del Mar Pines. About a year ago, I had a vision for changing the world and have worked hard since to make that difference.

My newly started organization, Words for the World, is quickly growing and we are reaching awesome milestones. Words for the World’s goal is to collect tablets, computers and chargers to distribute internationally to schools and communities who are in need of a stronger educational system. We are also a pending 501(c)3, so your donation can later be filed for a tax reduction. Our program will help to promote jobs, increase literacy rates, and build a better world; many steps at a time. We also accept cash donations through the mail. Our first donation destination for electronics will be Ethiopia, and we later hope to expand to Asia and South America.

Thank you so much for your help and for donation information, please visit: https://wordsfortheworld.org.

-Liam

How We’re Helping

Thank you Liam for creating this organization! I am so proud to have been your teacher and I’m happy to announce that we will be contributing all profits from this year’s DMP Arcade to Liam’s organization.

Mix it Up Day is Tuesday, October 31st!

Our school is registered to participate it national Mix it Up day!

Mix it Up is a fun day when students are encouraged to mix it up and sit with someone new at lunch. Students will be allowed to bring a blanket or towel to have their lunch picnic style!

What is Mix It Up at Lunch Day?

It’s a simple call to action for all grade levels: Take a new seat in the cafeteria. By taking a risk, students can cross the lines of division in a safe, supported environment, meet new people and help build an inclusive and welcoming school community.

Research shows that Mix It Up programming works. According to a survey of Mix organizers, the program produces powerful results:

97% said students’ interactions were positive during Mix It Up at Lunch Day.

95% said Mix It Up at Lunch Day prompted students to interact with people outside their normal social circles.

92% said Mix It Up at Lunch Day increased awareness about social boundaries and divisions within school.
